Pounding the pavement

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that most runners, and everyone else within the English speaking world, have likely heard the phrase, “pounding the pavement.” The phrase can take on various meanings. To a runner, it means piling on the mileage. To a salesman, it might be cold calling prospective clients. To a new college graduate, it might mean desperately seeking employment. I’m sure you get what I’m saying.

This week, however, my sister Megan continued what has become an annual tried and true Graber girl tradition. While running on the lakefront path, Megan was side swiped by a rollerblader, causing her to go tumbling off the path, tearing her flesh apart, and twisting her ankles --- not a good fate for someone trying to train for an upcoming marathon.

You see, every year since 2007, this has happened on the lakefront path to one of the Graber girls (me and my sisters) --- usually me. To change things up a bit, Megan took the honor of acquiring the title of Graber Girl Pavement Pounder 2010.

So to all of those Pavement Pounders 2010, cheers to the bumps, bruises, scraps, and scars!
You have managed to make running into a contact sport, and for that, here’s a shout out to you!

I know I run like a girl. Try to keep up!
