Sea legs

William Cowper , an early English poet coined what is now a relatively popular phrase, "Variety is the spice of life." As week 15 of marathon training comes to a close, I’m beginning to think variety is precisely what is going to get me to show up at the start line on 10.10.10.

Each week, typical training schedules recommend one to two days of cross training. When you are running anywhere between 35 - 70 miles a week, trust me, these cross training days can seem heaven sent. This past

weekend, my close friend Lauren and I took to the not-so-clean waters of the Chicago river, and ventured out for a 6 mile kayak of the north and east branches.
Had I not so desperately wanted to find a new alternative to cross training, I don’t know that I would have necessarily woken up early on a Sunday morning to kayak the Chicago river. However, the dire need to do anything but run led us both to stra
p on our sea legs, and see the city from a perspective we
otherwise may not have.
A big thank you to Lauren for being such a great sport (she still chose to kayak the morning after her elevator doors closed on her hand!). All in all, it was a beautiful morning, a great time, spent with fantastic company. We definitely worked up an appetite for Sunday football and all that goes with it!

I know I run like a girl. Try to keep up!
